“Scotland—From Edinburgh to the Isles”
A vicarious field trip from Edinburgh to the isles reveals the scenic beauty and geologic variety of Scotland. Fire and ice shape the cityscape of the historic capital of this small nation on the fringes of Western Europe. Outcrops in the city and the surrounding area provided James Hutton the basis for developing three fundamental concepts of modern geology—an earth old beyond imagination (deep time), igneous rocks, and the concept of the rock cycle. Iona, a small isle set in the Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland, is the home of Celtic Christianity and remarkable geologic tableau. Standing on the highest point of the island composed of 2.7 billion year old gneiss one can see a vast panorama that includes a sedimentary sequence built of 800 million year-old sandstone and shale cut by basaltic dikes intruded some 340 years old, the roof of a granite pluton 400 million years old, a vast plateau of basalts erupted 65 million years, and Ice Age gravels deposited within the last 25 thousand years. Trips to neighboring islands reveal spectacular columnar jointing and little birds (puffins) said to contain the souls of departed Irish monks within their breasts.

Position: Professor of Geology
Company: Texas Christian University
BiographyDr. John Breyer graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1970 with a degree in geology, while attending the school with 3 brothers and 1 sister. In 1974, he received a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Nebraska. After teaching at Nebraska (and serving as a scout for the university’s basketball team) for one year, Dr. Breyer moved to Fort Worth to work at TCU until 1981 when he became employed at the Exxon research lab in Houston. There he was project leader for the mining geology group in the Coal and Oil Shale Division. In 1984 he returned to TCU where he is currently a Professor of Geology. Dr. Breyer specializes in petroleum geology, exploration geophysics and sequence stratigraphy, and sedimentary geology. Research interests include petroleum geology and petrology of the Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth and Delaware basins, Middle Jurassic Deepwater Sands of the Cotton Valley
