Introduction to Lower Tuscaloosa Geology: Why Seismic Matters...Or Does It?

Discovered in the 1940’s the Lower Tuscaloosa fields of southwest Mississippi were developed on 40 acre spacing providing abundant well control to delineate the reservoir limits.  Upon closer inspection via detailed subsurface work utilizing the existing well control the abrupt reservoir variations become readily apparent in these fluvial and transitional marine sand sequences.  A review of fluvial depositional processes related to well control readily reveals the risks of relying on apparent high density well control alone when implementing a tertiary project.

In an effort to optimize well location, accurately define reservoir limits, image multiple channels and monitor tertiary performance Denbury Resources Inc. began in 2001 to acquire proprietary 3D shoots for each of their Lower Tuscaloosa CO2 tertiary floods in southwest Mississippi.  The sequence of 3D shoots beginning with Little Creek area in 2001, Mallalieu in 2005 and McComb area in 2006 depict the acquisition and processing advances especially when combined with the latest 3D interpretation software.

Speaker Jim Mulligan and Bob Schellhorn

Jim Mulligan earned a BS degree in Geology from Missouri School of Mines in 1972 and a Professional degree in 1999.  He began his career processing marine seismic for Western Geophysical in Houston, before accepting a production geology position with Sun Oil Co. in Midland.  Jim was later transferred to Houston and then Dallas where he worked as an exploration geologist.  After a two year stint with General American Oil Co. he joined LaRue, Moore & Schafer as Vice President of Exploration where for eleven years he represented numerous clients in the successful drilling of over 165 wells throughout the onshore gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana.  His most notable discovery (named after his wife) was the Gini-Wilcox field.  Denbury Resources Inc. has employed Jim since 1998 initially as a Senior Geologist evaluating domestic acquisition opportunities, then as Senior Exploration Geologist for Denbury’s Gulf of Mexico properties and until this past April as Senior Production Geologist mapping and developing Denbury operated properties in Mississippi and Alabama.  Jim is currently Denbury’s Manager of Geology for Mississippi and Alabama.

Bob Schellhorn received his BS in Geology from Southwest Missouri State University in 1982 and his MS in Geophysics from University of Texas at Dallas in 1987. He joined Sun Oil Company in 1985 (which later became Oryx Energy) and held various positions as a seismic interpreter in exploration and development; onshore and offshore.  Despite his best efforts, he was assigned to numerous technical assignments in seismic data processing, new seismic technologies, hydrocarbon indicator group, and AVO group. Since leaving Oryx in 1997, he has worked for Chieftain International in Dallas and in 2001 began working for Denbury Offshore.  During the last 3 years, he has been assigned to work Denbury’s extensive Mississippi portfolio of oil fields and CO2 fields.  He is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and Dallas Geophysical Society.  Bob is currently Denbury’s Manager of Geophysics.
